Artist Statement
Kristen Hewitt is a freelance writer currently living in Portland, Maine. After graduating from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine in 2009 where she majored in creative writing and minored in Japanese, she went on to study narrative journalism at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland. In addition to writing freelance articles for the Farmers’ Almanac, New York Art Beat, and Americans for Informed Democracy, she has worked as the editorial assistant for the magazine, ecopoetics, for the past year. Taking inspiration from poets like Muriel Rukeyser and Denise Levertov, she believes that poetry and documentary writing both share a powerful capacity to give voice to people and experiences not often heard. When she’s not reading or writing, she likes to hike and play rugby.
